Thanks for everyones suggestions. The project that I am doing involves a 4 ft. Christmas tree with carved Santas (just the tall cap, face and beard). I think that (50) 2" to 3" Santas will be used. This means that I have enough that I can set up an experiment. I will finish each Santa, using a different technique.I'll keep track of the various techniques and processes, and post the best results. Thanks again. Tom H

I wash, sand, seal with Krylon 3100 then use thinned paint for the wash effect. Sealing doesn't let the paint go into the wood so deep. Should I not seal until after painting and then use the poly?

fingers.....everyone has their own particular way of doing things, I suggest you take some pieces of scrap and try several methods and find the one you like!
