I think they may be broken....I loaded one with paint, put it against the Angel I'm painting and.......guess what......no paisley appeared! Where's the magic?? What did I do wrong....are they defective??? Maybe it's the wrong kind of paint?! Seriously though, even if I can't paint like Nancy G, these are some awesome little brushes. They are thicker at the base and come to a finer point than the detail brushes I have been using. Made some easy work of the eye lashes and eyebrows on her face, can't wait to give them more of a work out.....even if they do refuse to make perfect paisley on their own! Thanks Nancy G, for pointing them out to us! Even not on sale, they are worth the price! Deborah</IMG> |

Deborah, I was going to PM you but thought maybe someone else would ask this question. When I saw your post I went onto web and looked up Winston-Newton brushes. They really are not too badly priced I have seen brushes in Michaels that sell for a whole lot more. My only dilemma is I would be poor if I puchases every brush in the line. So my question is what would be a lets say a dozen profiles that you could start out with? Just like woodcarving when we started out we only had a few chisels and knifes but someone advised me as to what I needed I think I started with one knife and six chisels. Now I have over 50 knifes and too may chisels to count but I have done that over many years. So if you could advise us to what profiles we should start out with. You mentioned eyebrows and eyelashes so lets say we were doing Santa's what do you think we should purchase. Thanks in advance I am very interested in your and Nancy's response as I am starting into doing some Acrilic paintings on canvas as well. I am sure the other members of the board would be interested as well. I found out the hard way with chisels when I started and purchased cheap ones. There is no substitute for good quality. Colin

Here's a link to the Winsor-Newton website. Seems to have a lot of info. that might be helpful to anyone who wants to do "magic". No mention of pixie dust though--maybe that's what you need Callynne--to make one of your fairies come to life! And then she could do all the painting for you while you carve! Colin, what kind of painting are you doing--portraits, landscapes...? Sounds challenging... http://www.winsornewton.com/ Bob L |

OK -- Here's another attempt to "talk" about Winsor Newton. LOL I painted flat before I started carving - thanks to dear Ron Ranson in 1987 - and I was in love with Winsor Newton way back then and heavy on detail. Let's see if I can post a photo of a painting.

That's a detail of a 12x16 acrylic of a raccoon (in case you need to be told) I think I painted in the early 80's with WINSOR NEWTON

BobL I want to do some native art and some wild life painting but most of all I have an idea to do native wildlife my own design. Although I am not native by blood I have a passion for native art and the beliefs and ways of the native people. Here are a couple of pictures I painted the native one was in Acrilics on a poplar slab. The deer was done quite a few years ago and is in oil. I never persued the painting thing although I love to do it. Now the winter is here and its too cold to carve outside I think I would like to get back into my painting. Colin
