Tonight I tried my first attempt staining using something other than stain in a tube colors. I used mixol and a clear stain, and it looks decent so far, I plan on going in and adding some dark tones with my pyro pen, but that's later. Right now I ran across something weird. 4-5 spots most small one the size of a squashed split pea won't take any stain. No matter how much I try it won't take the color, at first I thought the wood cells weren't absorbing the pigment and running off onto my drop cloth. After holding the piece at an angle so the stain wouldn't run I sat there and watched as the wood drank up the stain but wouldn't change color. What on earth is going on and how can I get these spots to take stain?

| I thought that might be it, but I didn't touch the parts that aren't taking stain. Every other part that I touched took stain.

Figured out what was wrong. I was using a base that wasn't blending well with the pigment. Stripped it and went with a new base and the stain too perfectly!
