Default Finishes on Painted Carvings

:
I just finished a couple Santas and a snowman. I painted them. What finish should I put on now. A book I have said to dip them in boiled linseed oil. Is that what I do. Do I boil it on the stove, or buy it boiled? Is there a better finish?
Thanks again.

Hi Nate. You dont need to boil the linseed oil. You can purchase boiled linseed oil at home depot or lowes, or I'm sure just at about any reputable hardware store. Go to "Wood carving tutorials" on this site, at the second page, 10th thread down, you will see a detailed tutorial on finishing a carving, called, "Santa ornaments" (steps to finishing).

Hey Nate,
As an FYI...Boiled Linseed Oil is just linseed oil with the addition of several metallic "dryers" that allow it to dry in a shorter period of time. Pure linseed oil takes weeks to dry!
