Finish for Quilted Maple

Hi Folks,

I'm in the middle of a project using quilted maple. Do any of you have experience with this wood?

I would like a clear or light finish but I don't want to loose the "quilting" in the wood. Any suggestions?

Here is a nicely figured Maple lowboy finished in Laquer,, the grain shows up quite well,,

That is a beautiful piece, and yes the quilting shows well.

I wanted to keep the figure in a piece of quarter-sawn sycamore, and found my normal oil favorites didn't work well. Shellac turned out to be the best finish to keep the figure. Mike

I usually take some cut off pieces and try several different finishes to make sure I will like the end result. Try tung oil, Polyurethane Satin and Gloss. In my opinion you only risk losking the quilted figure if you use a stain that darkens it. My two Cents. Enjoy!

Mix a fresh batch of super blonde shellac, and pure linseed oil 50/50 to use as a filler sealer then finish with pure linseed oil. Nothing flips the grain on Maple quite like linseed oil. It really draws out all that expensive figure. This from a guy who reallly doesn't like pure Linseed Oil, but It's the very first thing I grab to flip the curl on maple. HTH. Marc
