Mine #3's measure 4mm in diameter and they are 7" long although I use longer up to 9" when I can find them.

If you go to WalMart, back in the yarn area you can get a knitting needle guage which has diameter holes for each of the sizes. Sock knitters use between sizes #1 through #4 depending on the yarn.

The points, of course, should be dull and you finish them with tung oil. You will make some knitter extremely happy.

(Garry, come on man, can't you keep up here ... ? We did the roof yesterday, today I have 16" of new sock on the needles, two pair of stretches cut out, my leaf spirit painted and I'm off to do a couple of patterns and drawings this afternoon.)

OK ... I'll accept that excuse ... it's a good one. So do you want me to send you up the yarn and needles by carrier pigeon???

Maybe BobD aught to move this to OFF Topic as this thread is sure headed south.

Susan, I haven't heard about "sock stretchers" for decades. My grandma used to knit all our socks and we had stretchers or "dryers" all over the place.

Here's a tip, on those. If you have a 2" or
2 1/2" forstner bit, drill out several holes along the length of those wooden forms and you will get a lot more even air distribution for drying, with no loss of strength.

Al, thanks for the tip! I will be making another set here in a few days and will try that. My Mom had an antique pair that hung on the wall by the fireplace. Her's were solid and had a primitive 'Grandma Moses' type scene painted on them. So when they weren't in use that became beautiful folk art pieces.
