Default Finger Painting

I was applying my boiled linseed oil finish this morning to my lastest carving. I had added some burnt umber oil paint to the oil for the back boards and the leaf spirits were plain - basswood colored - oiled. But I wanted a little touch of autumn coloring.

So I tried adding the red tones to the oil and brushed that along the leaf edge with little success. Lots of brush strokes appeared because the red is so strong ... so ... being totally committed at this point and wanting to get rid of the brush ridges I started rubbing them out with my finger tip.

It worked so well that I went ahead and applied the rest of the red tones, green tones and little touches of white using my finger tip as the applicator ...

Now I'm gonna haveta wear red nail polish for about a week or so to hide the color stains under my nails ... but I think it was worth the effort.

Susan

Wow Susan, those are beautiful, What a great idea with the paint! Love the carvings, finish, and the tree background. If you dont mind me asking, is this a one piece carving, or are the leaves with the faces mounted on the tree , either way it's an excellent piece of work. Do you have a pattern for this, I sure would like to try carving one.

I love the coloring and the carvings. Sometimes the best mistakes end up the best for the carving.....

Hi Marc, What I have is the drawing and I decided even after doing the pencil work to only carve two of the little dudes.

The back board on this one is three separate pieces with about a 1/2" space between each board. This doesn't show well because of the scan. It's far too cloudy and rainy today to get a photo. The back board idea was Thor's! Go here for how it's put together:
Help!!!

Greg, You are SOOO right! Sometimes I hate mistakes, other times they make the piece.

Hi-Ho I was trying for an expression of attitudes not one of agonies .... Pout!

Susan

I sure like the carvings and the effect with color. I love the red used, so I'll have to try your technique. My problem tho, when these ole hands get somewhat stained or ground in greasy, my wife says ok, you do dishes and soak those hands up. Sometimes takes 2 or 3 washings to clean em, so I'm gonna hafta be careful. Earl

You're lucky Curly, Susan said she would wear red nail polish, but my wife of 40+ years would flip out if I covered up with nail polish of any color. Be happy doing the dishes!
