| | Epoxy As A Finish Just got around to the last thread on BLO and noticed the comment on epoxy as a finish. There are thin eoxys avalable for such purposes. Check marine supply sources and even hardware stores. If you can't locate a true clear epoxy finish, try one of those thin epoxy repair products (Sill Stop, Git Rot, etc).

| | Re: Epoxy As A Finish Just a couple of thoughts here about epoxy on wood outdoors.
I've seen epoxy finishes on outdoor signs and when the moisture eventually gets in (and it will) it's not pretty. Epoxy isn't flexable and doesn't breathe which leads to a lot of problems (you can read this between the lines in their info) They can't even really be refinished.
If you've read the info on the West Systems site, they tell you that it still needs a few coats of varnish for UV protection (urethanes work good too). Uv protection is very important. So, the way the varnishes and urethanes work is they actually erode over time.....sorta like sacrificing a little on a daily basis. When the coating gets thin, it's time to recoat. Recoat????? If you have to recoat just like without the epoxy, whats the advantage?
I have no idea about the yellowing......
Bottom line is (like I always say) if it works for you, then it's the best way for you.
Like I said, just a couple of thoughts.
Good luck and make chips!

| | Re: Epoxy As A Finish Ash,
To my knowledge there isn't a clear that will last a long time without recoating. The next best would be a solid stain containing acrylic.....such as Cabots. Probly the best is Ben Moore 25 yr. acrlyic paint. 2 coats acrylic primer with 3 coats "Moore Glow" . I offer all three and let the customer pick because they all have their issues and they all look different.
Once again, that's what works for me.
BTW, I have test samples with friends that I have in the industry, testing my clear finish system in Quebec, the Tetons (7,000 ft. elevation....bad UV), the high desert in OR, Southern CA, Texas, Ga and all over the North East.
Hope this is helpful.....

| | Re: Epoxy As A Finish Envirotex works good outdoors and will last for years.....after a few years it will get a haze on it, but all you have to do is rub it down with some auto wax and its good to go again. Its basically a pour coat, but suppose if you worked fast and with thin coating you could brush it on? |

| | Re: Epoxy As A Finish I've seen this type of material before but I don't know of anyone using it.......which of course means absolutly nothing.
However the company says. here, Environmental Technology Inc. it's not recommended for outdoor use.
Their own info seems conflicted.
There is also no info on UV protection.
But hey, if it works for you then it's the best for you.

| | Re: Epoxy As A Finish Its possible the formula has changed.....I worked with the inventor on bottling the stuff back in the early 70's so maybe my info is a bit out of date lol | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
