Unhappy what do I do?

I have carved Three Bearded Heads into my old tree stump, with, I think, some success BUT its now 3/4 weeks since I finished and there is a moisture (Sap?)leaking from the carved area which is making the new surface Black and moldy
What can I do to preserve the wood surface. ( its too wet to varnish )
The stump was a living tree just Two years ago and I thought that it would have dried out by now.

Depends on the tree some tree's like willow it is almost impossible to kill them. In fact it sounds like a willow to me if the sap is still coming out of it. What I would suggest is a mixture of bleech and water, douse the whole stump with it and repeat it again in a few days. That should get rid of the mold and mildew. It will lighten the stump a little but wont hurt the wood.
