I have a few pieces that I finished in the last few weeks and was wondering if it was to late to antique it with Boiled Linseed Oil. When is it to late to do this? I painted the pieces using acrylics and finished them with Poly spray(because this is all I have learned so far). I am scared to try anything else.

I do not believe it is too late, but I am unsure of the BLO's ability to penetrate the Poly. A lot of the folks here who do use BLO and a Poly like product (Deft), antique it first then seal it, followed a day later with some sort of Wax. In your case you might be better off using a wax antiqueing method. Some folks use a combination of both Light and Dark Watco waxes (make sure you buy the wax not a Danish Oil). Hope this helps.

Tony is spot on with his recommendation. I tried the BLO after a couple of coats of Deft and did not see any fdifference in how the piece looked. I tried it even though I had always used BLO first.

If you can't find Watco products near you, check out the local hardware and paint stores for Minwax paste wax. If you get the darker colored wax it will give an "aged" look to your carving. Put on a few coats, letting it dry and buffing well between coats. This will darken the whole piece and put some darker shadows into the crevices without overpowering your painting. Al |
