I've noticed that some of the panel carvings shown here on the site are shaded to achieve the effect of depth. How is the shading achieved? With Paint? Different stains? I've started a panel carving on cherry of a labrador retriever, I need to figure out how to finish it so that there is depth and darkness to define detail where necessary.

You could use a stain to darken the background (as in "Dragon" or "Carving Hands" in my photos) or you could use textures of shallow gouge or V-tools cuts. I find it helps to display relief panels where the lighting emphasizes the depth.
