| | Re: what is your favorite carving tool? Flexcut SKX 200 RPC and SK Blades. Only been using it for around a year, but won't ever work without one again ! I can always switch the blades to handles for fine detail, but it sure nocks out the production material. HTH. Marc |

| | Re: what is your favorite carving tool? Well, my favorite is STILL (and probably the one I use least) my Boy Scout Camilus 3 blade whittler. Never have modified the blades. Don't seem to need to, they all work just like they are supposed to, are easy to sharpen and stay sharp. I don't use it much, but when out camping, it's a friend that I can call on to whittle up all kinds of whimsies! At the same time, I always cary my Swiss Army camper, for all those other mudane, around the camp duties.

| | Re: what is your favorite carving tool? I guess based on the lengths of my chisels the # 5 's are the shortest. They have always been my favorites,,like Goldilocks,,not too flat,,not too curved,,,,Juuuust right. With time , you can make it act like a flat chisel,,or make it act like a really curved one,It's Swiss made by the way |

| | Re: what is your favorite carving tool? I agree with the "hooked skew" as my favorite. I saw one being used, bought one, and was amazed. It can do so many things, it is incredible; but, I am not sure it would be worthwhile for chip carving.
One thing about the original version, Ashley Isles, it is still the best. I have tried some of the other attempts and they just can't seem to get the right curvatre and thickness for the tool. I have the long version and am planning on buying the palm tool also. |

| | Re: what is your favorite carving tool? My favorite tool? Ummm....yes?!?!? LOL I guess I have two--the palm version of the Ashley Iles Hooked Skew chisel that I use as an all purpose tool--roughing, shaping, and detail. The second is as Lynn Doughty likes to call it "Ol' Reliable"--an ordinary fixed blade utility knife that is very quickly being replaced by a folding version of it that I recently discovered in Wal-Mart and bought. It is a Gerber EAB (Exchange-A-Blade) folding pocketknife that uses ordinary utility blades just like "Ol' Reliable". The big difference is that it has a 1 1/2" working length. The "Old Reliable" has a length of 1 1/4". The extra 1/4" gives me a little "breathing room" when carving, i.e. a little more room to maneuver the knife without the handle getting in the way. Speaking of which, it is also much thinner and fairly comfortable to hold. I am on the fence as to whether to take the pocket clip off because while it could be annoying (not so bad so far) it also doubles as an additional gripping feature.

I just like the feel of these tools in my hand against the wood...also one often means I am starting a new piece and the other often means I'm getting near the end! ;-)
Ashley Iles #40 V tool 5/8"
Two Cherries #3 19mm
