Default Work Sharp 2000

Well, my new WS2000 came in last night and I spent a coupla' hours today sharpening chisels, about 30 of them. So far I am duly impressed. I have to say though, contrary to what the guy at the store claimed, I still had to hit each one with the felt wheel for them to really cut well. He claimed I could take them straight from the WS2000 and carve with them. Not so. But just a touch on felt wheel after the WS and they were ready to go. I am well pleased so far as I tried each one on scrap after sharpening and they seemed to be extra sharp. The proof is in the pudding though and I will know more when I actually start carving with them.

Did you use the slotted paper? Did you have to replace the paper? If so after how many chisels?

I did use the slotted paper and it sharpened the entire(approx) 30 chisels. Showed some wear when I was done but I would guess it will do another 25-30 before I have to replace it.There is a slight learning curve to it but I got the knack of it pretty quickly. A light above and a magic marker definitely help. All in all it went pretty fast and after a quick strop on my felt wheel the carving chisels are VERY sharp. I am satisfied. I don't think I will have to use the WS on these chisels again very soon, just strop. I recently sent 22 chisels that I had bought at a sale to Rick Ferry to get them in shape and if you figure, two times like that will pay for this thing. The price, plus how quick it is, is what attracted me to it in the first place.
It also did a great job on a few bench chisels and my turning chisels.

Is there any kind of guide to help you keep a consistent angle when sharpening gouges? Or are you just working freehand?

Any trouble sharpening V-tools?

Thanks,
Pete

There is no guide for the gouges like there is for bench chisels but you are looking at the bevel that you are sharpening and yes the carving chisels are sharpened freehand but it is very easy and quick. I had no trouble with the V tools. It only took a minute or so to get used to it. In my opinion it is a great little machine and well worth the money. I have been sharpening tools for 30 years and for me this is the fastest and easiest way I have found. I can do it the old fashioned way but why would I want to?
You be your own judge on this thing but I really like it.

Doug....Where'd you get it? Price? Can you check your book to see if they have a web adress so we can look it up and read about it? I'm intrigued!

Lynn, this one piqued my interest too, so I snooped around the web and found this site. http://www.tylertool.com/worksharp.html

unless it is reversable, I doubt it would be very effective on knives! Not sure why all sharpening machines don't reverse?

I got mine from Rockler but Tyler Tool and several other places have them for $100.00 too. Now I don't want to talk anyone into anything and some might not think as much of it as I do but I really like it. As I said earlier, you will still have to strop. As to the knives, I tried an old cheapie and it did sharpen it but it would be great if the motor were reversible.

Doug,

What did it come with from Rockler? Did you have to buy the abrasive kit seperately?
