Sean,
If you're wanting to learn to do caricatures and in-the-round, I'd agree with getting a good book on the subject. Then, before 2007 is too old, I'd suggest you take a carving workshop on caricatures. Contact Andy at the Knothole in Pleasant Hill and see if he's got Phil and Vickie Bishop coming or Harold Enlow (although he's not doing very many workshops now that he's retired) or someone comparable. Or, sign up for a workshop at the seminars held at Baker Univ. at Baldwin City, KS this summer. They will have caricatures, animals, birds, relief, burning, etc. from which to select. Attend the Kansas City woodcarving show in March and meet some of the area carvers and find out when classes are held.

I muddled through learnng to carve for 2-3 years with the help of some really good, patient carvers in our club, but when I took the first carving seminar with a professional instructor, it all started coming together.

That's just my suggestion--for what it's worth.

If I wanted just a "little" power machine would this be okay to help me learn carving in the round?

For $20 would it work?

Sean, I had this tool, pretty much worthless, I gave it away after a few trys with it. If you are really set on using power and only have $50 to spend I would suggest a dremel. Not the cordless. then get yourself a medium Typhoon or Kutzall bur.

Happy New Year!
