Big Dog is the owner of The Woodcraft Shop in Bettendorf IA, he handles Henry Taylor carving tools including a full range of their palm tools, he's the only one I know that has the palm tools in a full range. He's one of the big cheeses that runs the Davanport show.
Try this url for a on-line catalogue...might be last years one though. http://216.106.57.170/~bigdog/
You can request a paper catalogue.

I bookmarked their site
That is a supplier that i was not famillar with
Old Gord
I have their last year's catalog
and his on line is hard for me to follow
but I saw some burrs in the older catalog I have and called them and the price is only a few cents different
I am going to be ordering some diamond burrs from him either in Jan or Feb
He also has some books and patterns I want as well
Did not realize he was selling the Taylor tools
I like the looks of the taylors and the price
more expensive than Ramelson and Flexcut but less than Stubai and Pfeil
Thanks again to both of you
Congrats Ed and Donna
see you are a mod now too |

| | Re: Veiners, Guages, V-tools, about them and how to sharpen? I've gotten carving tools from Dick Belcher in Ohio (shown as Belcher Carving Supply in one of the above postings.) He's good people and as a rule, he sharpens everything he sends out in orders. In fact, from time to time when I get a difficult v-tool that I can't get sharpened like I want it, I send it to Dick. He's reasonable and quick to return it. If I remember right, he charges $2 per tool plus shipping. He's at 6205 US Route 40, Tipp City Ohio 45371 937) 845-0346
Larry Yudis is the Big Dog at Bettendorf at The Woodcraft Shop at 2724 State Street, Bettendorf, Ia 52722 - 800-397-2278. He has Taylor, Flexcut, Ramelson, Stubi, Helvie, etc. Larry and Carol come to the Kansas City carving show every spring and I usually stock up then, but I have ordered stuff direct--good people, too. They are in charge of the National Wood Congress that is held in Bettendorf each year and they do a great job. I went there last year.
As far as replacing the handles on the stubby Harmen/Ramelson tools, a carving friend who has a lathe helped me make a bunch of walnut handles in shapes to match what fit our hands. We experimented with some junk wood to start with then used the walnut. We used a drill press to drill the holes for the shafts. About the only hint that we learned the hard way (other than avoiding the pointy end while tapping the old handle off) was to use 5 minute epoxy and hold the shaft straight until it sets. We had one droop because the hole was quite a bit bigger than the metal. We made some copper collars (copper tubing) to go around the wood where the wood meets the shaft to reinforce it, but we got tired of it and quit doing it. Haven't split out the handles yet! Some suppliers sell replacement handles but we couldn't find them when we wanted them--made our own!
Hope that helps. And thanks, Big Wayne. It's quite an honor...and fun too.
