| | Re: utility knife? "Well I be a Chip Flicker"!. Good advise BobD. Yes, a box cutter is unusual and does =take a little getting use to but like all knife blades,, can be motified to fit the application. Like rounding off the back side for more ease on the thumb, narrowing down the back side for a less big blade. Were there is a will, there is a way.
I first discredited the use of a box cutter but watching Lynn on several occassions and then trying it myself, I danc to a different tune now. I don't use it excluesively but find I do use it more and more.
Dave, Got to get some of themthere American made Blade son. They do strop just as nice as ay other blade. Now to get Rick Ferry's knife out and give it a try. May find I like it even better than all of my favorit knives. LOL
Yep BobD, I like that advise for a newbie as well as and old F--T. |

Well. Why should you when you've got all those extra plane blades hanging around? Speaking of which, I lucked into a deal on NOS Stanley 60 1/2 blades, and bought more than I can use, which I would gladly trade for a Cman 3732 blade in decent condition (their Stanley #65 equivalent). If you, ahhh, knew where one was. Or someone who might. Or someone who knew someone...

| | Re: utility knife? These guys are right when it comes to a great knife or any other tool. Denny sells them all. About 2 yrs ago I called Denny and we talked for a hour on the phone. Denny told me he is a carver and he got tired of getting good looking knives that didn't work right. So he started making his own knives for quality and not looks. His friend started using Denny's knives and the business went from their. I got my wife about all the tools Denny makes and I have a few myself. Very good quality tools. A good pocket knife would do as good or better than a utility knife. Kcubal |

| | Re: utility knife? Back about three weeks ago I dug out an old Stanley 299 Utility Knife and some blades. Gave it a good try. Modified some blades to different profiles and I got to tell you, I'm even more impressed with Lynn's work than ever before if he does it with a utility knife. It's a process that just doesn't work for me. I guess old habits are hard to break. Starting today, it's back to the pocket knives for me. If I didn't need to be so mobile, I'd use a fixed blade like a Helvie, Denny, or some such. |

| | Re: utility knife? You right Ed, It does take getting use to it. Vicki Bishop and I talked about the use of the utility knife as see saw ne using one in class. Now It wasn't the only knife I had there and after Phil motified and sharpen one of my Denny's, I have it to use also.
There are some places a utility knife can't get to and a longer, narrow knife blade does the trick. But hogging of lumber on a piece, it is the utility knife for me. Detailing is left to the longer and narrow bladed knives.
Interesting to find out several do use the utility knife though.
To each his own and what they want to use and what is their favorites are.
I have mine. |
