Default Re: Transfer Tool

I was looking in the craft section at Wal Mart a couple of weeks ago

They had 2 inexpensive wood burners
Both were the same brand
Difference was 1 had the transper tool as 1 of the tips and the other had had a hot knife as 1 of the tips
same except for that

if I was going to buy 1 i think I would get the 1 at Wal Mart
Cheap enough and get some wood burning tips to try out as well
i don't do much wood burning. The 1 I have came from Wal Mart or Hobby Lobby
but it does not have the transfer tool. Thought i would try the $20 wood burner before I sunk $500 into a really good 1 with all the tips.
The tip AlArchie made looks exactly like the trnsfer tools in the catalogs

Wayne, if you are looking to buy one of those "hobby shop" woodburners, make sure you get one with at least 30 watts rating. Some have dual wattage, 15 and 30 switchable on the handle. The 15 watt ones really don't produce enough heat to burn for any length of time, and the tips cool down rather quickly, requiring you to pause and let the tip re-heat for a few seconds. I think the lower watt ones would probaly work better for a transfer tip, but that may cool down too quickly too. I'd opt for the 30 watt model, as it is about the same price, within 5 bucks.

Thanks
That is the 1 I got
single wattage 30 watts

hey it is nothing special but I do not do hardly any burning
about the only thing I use it for is putting my initials and the date on the end of the walking canes and sticks before I slip the rubber tip on. El cleapo and it works good for that. Used it also just playing around and did a couple of small designs on a piece of pine limb.
I can see it having some uses for doing hair and other things and if I was going to really get into Pyro
i would get a good 1
But I just play and put my initials on sticks and the cheapie is good for me

The last carving tool i bought was more expensive than this little burner
