Default tormex honing question

I have the tormex and am dessing the leather wheels with oil. Is there an advantage / disadvantage of using mineral oil on the wheels instead of the light machine oil that they say to use ? Any input would be appreciated.

I believe it doesn’t really matter as long as you don’t use oil that might turn rancid. On the Tormek site there is a lot of discussion about this and what compounds etc. I like Neatfoot Oil (Tandy’s) because it’s what I use on my flat hones and have on hand. Seems to work as well as any.

+1 for Neatfoot, it's been used on leather for many, many years. Keeps it nice and pliable.

Hope people are still reading this thread...

Got my Tormek about 5 years ago and love it.

Imagine my surprise when I read in this thread about putting oil on the honing wheel and on the contoured leather wheel! I don't think I saw anything about this in the materials that came with mine. I think that the distributor that I bought mine from must have left these instructions out. I always wondered about the compound not staying on the wheel very well.

Dryheat - You mentioned discussions regarding this this on the Tormek web site. Could you give me the link please? I went to www.tormek.com and didn't find any discussion forum there..... Did I miss it, or were you referring to another site? Thanks! I really want to follow up on this!
