Tormek Just bought a Tormek wet grinder today... only complaint is from my wife: I'll be late for dinner since I want to resharpen all my tools right now. The machine is reasonably easy to use even for a beginner like me: the jig that's included is well designed, the cutting angle relatively easy to determine with it. Only tricky spot was when I sharpened the final edge using the side of the stone: had to do it completely by eye. But since the cutting edge had been jigged, it was no actual problem. Missed the first try since I'd become too trusting with the jig - second try was successful. The stone doesn't grind away metal too fast, it's easy to control. Recommended. The leather stropping wheel is just great - everything's razor sharp in no time flat.
If I start looking like a Tormek salesman - I'm not. It was just such a pleasant surprise I wanted to share it. In fact Ashley Iles has a comparable system - I would have bought it but I didn't want to go into the trouble finding out about grinders (they sell stones and so forth to replace the standard grinding stone). Check out about their system too if you want to save some money. Tormek is a ready package, that's why I went for it - and also because the speed is not too high, better for a beginner. The cheapest model is just fine unless you need to do a whole lot of sharpening. |
