Default Tool Storage Box

I am showing what I think is kind of a neat tool storage box I receintly built using a cheap($20) box from Harbor Freight and some 3/8" plywood.

I used about five different sizes of Forstener Bits to drill the holes as not all of the handles and blades would fit using one size. The cutting edges of the gouges do not touch the bottom so as to prevent dulling.

Also I included my way of keeping track of all of my chisels. I use paint sticks from the paint department at Home Depot. They are the larger ones of the two sizes they cary.

Very ingenious! I like the way that all your tools are identified.

Laying out the lines of holes took a bit of time along with sizing the holes for the chisels. The ends were dadoed to make it more solid and when drilling the holes I used a guide to make sure they all lined up. I guess I spent several evenings playing with it but it was worth it. A few of the holes had to have small holes on each side to allow the larger gouges to fit.

On the negative side I have the cardboard map that shows where each gouge goes as it is hard to see the numbers on all of the tools when in the box. The tools are all lined up by curve/size so that they are easy to find being that there are 57 gouges in this small area.

That's one of the nicest set-ups I've seen! Well done! I may try to copy it a bit if you don't mind. Great idea, very usable.

Thank you as you just solved a big problem for me if it's OK to steal some of your ideas. Thanks again-Mike

Hey Baldy - This is REALLY nice. I think I'll be borrowing some of your design as well. I am kind of inclined to do the same thing but with a foldout design where each line of gouges in the rack is hinged together and can be folded out into a long straight line. I forget where I saw this (probably up here somewhere). Gotta look around.

Love your tool size chart on the paint stick idea. Chris Pye in one of his books suggests something similar.

Where did you get the tool box? It looks really nice.

Chuck
