| | Sump Pump sharpening machine? Some time ago I read where someone designed a sharpening machine out of a sump pump, it was in Chip Chats magazine in an issue probably 10yrs back or so and there were plans that could be ordered at that time.
My question is does anyone know about this or have more info.
This sump pump is the kind where the motor is out of the PIT.
I have an old sump pump that I was thinking about using for this..

| | Re: Sump Pump sharpening machine? The sump pump has a LONG 1/2" shaft from the motor to the impeller and this is where the person who designed the sharpener attached the different wheels and such. |

| | Re: Sump Pump sharpening machine? That actually sounds like a good idea, what speed did it run at? Probably have to be slowed down considerably. I have a spare pump here in the basement and no power sharpener.....hummmmm......that might work!

| | Re: Sump Pump sharpening machine? Well I believe the motor runs at about 1725 rpm or maybe even slower, I'd say that the unit lays horizontal, and has two pillow blocks too support the LONG shaft and the motor is secured some how.
The problem lies here how do you fasten the wheels and such to the shaft and get it all to be smooth running?

| | Re: Sump Pump sharpening machine? well back to the pulley and belt and run to a mandrel lol..................adjusting the pulleys you can also cut that speed in half....the slower the better in my opinion.... |

| | Re: Sump Pump sharpening machine? Hi R-Olds, shaft collars are one way to fasten wheels to shafts.
All the extra bits of gear you need to create your sharpener/grinder are listed on this web site. http://www.texaswoodcarvers.com/Tool...hine_Parts.htm
You said that you got the idea from an article in Chip Chats issue of about 10 years ago, I don't recall the article but I'll see if I have it listed in my article index, if not the web page I posted should give you enough parts info to make your sharpener.
Let us know how you make out. .

| | Re: Sump Pump sharpening machine? R-OLDS, I did a search on my index of more than 20 years of Chip Chats and nothing turns up with a sump pump connection.
It might have been one of those small 1/8 of a page notes that you see in Chip Chats when someone wants to sell something, so it wouldn't get indexed by me unless it had a large picture or construction details.
Was this a belt grinder unit by any chance?
If so, I can help you with that kind of sharpening unit.
Leave me a private message with your e-mail address if this is what you are looking for.

| | Re: Sump Pump sharpening machine? There was an article in one of the woodworking forums on how one guy made a horizontal flat lap or power hone from a dual disk floor buffing machine. Don’t remember all the details but he replaced the brushes with leather discs and made a box to mount the head upside down in. He claimed that it worked well for chisels and plane blades. I think one could find the floor buffers at flea market and yard sales. Ed |

Old Gord:
No it was not a belt grinder, just the sump pump and different wheels some how mounted to the 1/2" shaft.
The article was in regards to someone selling plans for the unit and it was in chip chats of the 1980s I believe.
The URL to the Old Texas WoodCarvers This was good information Thanks!
