Default stroping on wood

I've read somewhere that a person can strop on wood. Just rub on some compound on the wood and strop. Is this a common thing to do? Wondering how many people here pratice this.

I've also read here that a leather strop can round a blade if the strop is old and soft. Can I avoid this pitfall if I use wood or is there a different reason to use wood

does this make sense... this a probably a beginner question with an obvious answer but i had to ask.

Thanks
Bryan

Any strop can round the blade if you don't lift it at the end of the stroke. If you kind of roll it off...it will dull the blade. I have used bond paper with compound on it to sharpen and it works well too....just about anything that is firm and flat.......errr except tortillas..they don't work to good

Hi-Ho...You stand corrected.... everything will be fine if you use the right brand of taco sauce!

One more correction........if you are gonna strop with tortillas you need to use the corn tortillas for rough stropping and the final finishing stropping on the softer flour tortillas!
Norb

PS: I have a few round thick maple wheels I use in my power drill to strop and then still do a final strop on the smooth leather.

Norb... You've got it wrong too.... It's the heart healthy whole wheat tortillas for the rough honing and the white flour tortillas for the final finish although you might try the spinach variety if you've a mind too! Ha! Ha!

Norb, do you pour the maple on the tortillas before or after stropping?

I pour the maple on the tortillas and then eat them and end up stopping on the cardboard box?

tortillas?
used only at the hunting camp... for pancakes at breakfast with butter and syrup, or
they make good dumplings when your boiling down a good stewing hen ...

wood as a hone, check out the flexcut slip strop
I got 3 different hones for my gouges made from basswood, each palm chisel profile was used to cut its own shape into the wood, i just apply little compound and hone the whole profile works on the whorls on the surface in a few strokes its done...
