| | Strop Instructions I recently purchased a "Rick Butz" hand-held strop from Woodcraft. I also purchased some micro fine stropping compound (green). I applied a small quanity of the compound to a flat side of the strop. I am amazed at how sharp my knives are now. My question is do you continue to apply the compound? If so how frequently, and will it ever build up to the point that you need to remove it from the strop. If so how do you remove the compound?
Thanks in advance. |

| | Re: Strop Instructions I apply an even coat of compound when I see more leather than compound. If the strop begins to look or feel "gunky" I scrape the strop with the back of my roughing knife and re-apply. |

| | Re: Strop Instructions I wouldn't worry to much about the strop and loading up with compound often, I have a couple home made strops that maybe get a fresh coating of compound every couple of months.
If you think you need compound on the strop, go ahead and add some more. As for cleaning the old off. Maybe once a year I will go through my strops and clean the old compound and black looking stuff off and reapply compound. I use several differnt kinds of Compound and find them all work great. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
