I own a Flex Cut roughing knife and don't care for the handle shape, nor the flex in the blade as another member already noted. It also dulls faster than my other blades.

By far my favorite right now is made by Del Stubbs at Pine Wood Forge.

Great knife to use for long periods. I haven't found any "hot spots" even after long sessions.

Another one you might want to look at is North Bay Forge. I do not have a carving knife but use on of their bent knives. Quality is very high, and at a working mans price.

Good luck and I hope I was somewhat helpful.

Those knives at Pine Ridge Forge do look pretty sweet. And I love Ed s advice "you can't have too many tools." Since I like the Flexcut carvin' jack I guess I'm one of those who is going to like flexcut, and I won't hesitate to take up a good deal on them, but also, since I'm new to this game, I'll try more forged gouges and see if I can feel the difference. In the meantime, to get ahead a few more profiles I'll probably get the Little Shavers starter's kit or a Ramelson set of palm tools. Then go from there one tool at a time as I find I need (or want) them. And I'll search some of the other threads on flexcut vs other tools. Sorry to rehash old stuff, but thanks to all for your responses.

Now, there's a good deal! You can't go wrong with that.

I thought so too, especially since I'm using old leather work gloves to protect my hands (and when I don't I cut myself! I buy stock in bandaids.), and generally could use all the other stuff in the kit. And a wooden box to bring things to the carving club in would sure beat the catch-all canvas bag I've been using. Of course it was the message boards here that first pointed me in the direction of Little Shavers.
