Usually on material that heavy, pre drilled, or punched holes would be best.

Tandy sells "stitch punches" that make a series of slash holes for stitching. Then you can either stitch by hand or use one of the handy stitchers. I'll see if I can find a link.

I've used the single hole kind, like the one at the bottom of the Tandy page that Al posted. Works fine and makes stiching easy, and neat.

for whats it worth : i found a tracing wheel like this one below and grinded half the teeth (skiping one grinding one) then on a wooden board i drilled every hole with the dremel (it gets you there quite fast) then i found that hand stitching was faster/tighter than with the speedy stitcher for my application

heres the result of the project :
