Don't know what happened. Must have nicked a glove seam with a tool. Anyway, the whole seam along the thumb opened up like magic. Otherwise, the gloves are perfectly good but the seam in the leather had to be fixed. The "Speedy Stitcher" sewing awl is American-made by Stewart MFG in Poughkeepsie, NY. Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl | Sewing Tool - Hand Tool - Stitch Repairs. Buy one before all we can get is some Pacific Rim knock-off. I paid $15 in a farm store (with the horse tack, etc. Comes loaded with waxed twine, There are two needles stored under the ferrule. Some fiddle to get the thread running up the groove of the collet and the groove of the needle. The sewing instructions are straight forward, did a beautiful job. Hardest part was getting the glove thumb turned back into itself again. Tarps, heavy denim seams, there's all kinds of stuff I can fix (which need it badly). Carvers often comment on whether a tool arrives "carving sharp" from the factory. I can tell you from experience that the needles are stab-yourself, blood-letting sharp, as supplied. The irony was that I had yet to make my first stitch. |

Lee Valley sells them for 12.95 Canadian. I just bought one before Christmas, an excellent tool for the price. Fixed the belt loop on a knife sheath.

In this little village of 600 people, it doesn't hurt to shop locally. There's the shipping and the time as well. The Farm Store is about 2 blocks away (nothing much here is more than 2 blocks from anywhere else) and I was home with the tool in less than 15 minutes. I went in and explained what I wanted to do, they took me back into the horse tack section and there it was! I'd never seen one that I can recall. Certainly works better and does a more secure job than any hand stitching that I could attempt to do. Hand stitching. Just about! |

I want to make blade covers out of leather, about 1/8 " thick, do you think this would work? Dave |

From my one-shot experience, I think it would be fine. Dave: how do you propose to get the blade cover to stay on the knife? I destroyed a rotten pair of boots and got two hand-sized panels of leather to try the same thing. |

IMO the speedy stitcher wont work in such thick material. i broke two needles in two 1/16" piece of leather i was trying to sew together so i resigned and drilled every holes with a dremel and then i sew the thing by hand double stitching everything tight.
