| | Re: Spear point chisel I've looked at that several times...and thought about it each time. I love the Japan Woodworker catalog (my parents got me a sushi knife and one of the cermaic paring knives out of it for my birthday).
Hmmm...I see a product review coming up on this. Is anyone else interested in it??? It never hurts to have some feedback from people interested in the tool when I request a sample to review!

| | Re: Spear point chisel Sure do, bought it in Hayama, Japan sometime between 1966 and 1969. Never used it. Still has the price tag 220 Yen. At 360 to the dollar, that works out to somewhere in the vicinity of 60 cents. Prices sure have changed. Got a few other chisels that I bought at the same time. Those I've used.
The Japanese have a whole different way of looking at wood.

| | Re: Spear point chisel Plain Ol Ed - That's kind of the feeling I get when I looked at it, neat to have but I could do the same thing witn the tools I already have. My new and wonderful hooked skew, on the other hand is somehing I wont regret ever, I used that a lot of times due to the comfortit gives for a cut.
He BobD- Maybe it would be a neat article to have reviews of a bunch of "specialty" carving tools and tools that are only used rarely, so carvers can decide if they are worth the cost, and introduce folks to carving tools they may never had heard of. Just an idea. |

| | Re: Spear point chisel I made a tool very similar to the spearpoint to use in relief carving. It will plane the background in tight corners very well but you need to use it carefully. It tends to dig in and leave furrows.

| | Re: Spear point chisel I have one, bought it last year when I did that big sign in Red Cedar. I found it great for smoothing the difficult areas, in the relieved background, especially around letters and the Celtic knot work.
It actually works like a plane. A very unique tool and can be used for quite a number of applications ........ in fact I was using it this week, smoothing the cloths on a piece, of a captain at the helm of his ship. It is bigger than I expected, and I would be happier if it came in a size smaller, but it really depens on the size of your carving. It holds a marvelous edge, great steel.
