| | Re: some advice...PLEASE! Keoma,
Well lets see we do I start, First , I am always concerned with the steel used. Hi carbon doesn't mean forged. I like the miller set made in USA , because it means the were made to standards. Does not mean the tools are good but they did have set standards for the steel.
I am always skepitical of tools that are look alikes, they are made to look like high end tools but may have steel that will not take an edge.
The one set looks like wood hollow, for the ammount of time it will take to make them work it would be cheaper to buy a set of phiels .
Not knowing the tools , who made them , and one of the first things posted is a disclaimer about legal crap.. I would run away from them as fast as possible.
You asked for opinions , well, a name brand tool , phiel , two cherries , etc .. have good reasons the pro's use them. Why even at the expense that are purchased over and over. They are know for service year after year.
My opinion I would pass all but the millers.

| | Re: some advice...PLEASE! I wouldn't recommend any of those. Some of the sets have good steel in them, but sharpening them will take a long time as the bevels are all wrong. A couple of them have horrible steel and nothing will make them right. I buy these things and play with them all the time as, I guess you could call it a hobby, or maybe terminal curiosity disease. The Millers Falls set Keoma posted a link to is a good set if it's in good condition. Hard to tell from the picture. As a first set, I would recommend this one. http://www.littleshavers.com/BegKit.html

| | Re: some advice...PLEASE! the best set i saw would be the millers fall set of the ones you marked it all depends on how much you can budget but do several searches say just for flexcut then millers falls or ramelson on e-bay and should bring up plenty those are all pretty good beginner sets i have bought sets of all three on there most the time if your patient for less than 20.00 i usually have to clean and hone them but i try to keep a set or two because when i am set up selling or giving demonstrations i always have people wanting to buy knifes or tools so i buy them there and usually only make a very few dollars on them but just to get them started there good sets.so keep a close eye, course there is rick at little shavers with a beginner kit as well as mac at smoky mountain woodcarvers. good luck |
