You can't go too far wrong for less than $30. Sharpen them up and give them a go. They look OK, but I can't see how they would be intended for gunstock carving, unless you were going to carve an entire gunstock and not jsut decorate one. Mike

If they are Chrome Vanadium as stated, they will be great once you have sharpened them. CV is the same stuff Case uses in their non-stainless knives.

For another $24.00 you could send them to Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply, to be sharpened, Rick does a great job !! For under $50.00 you have a nice set of tools.

Save for handle color, this set looks exactly like a set of Chinese made chisels that I bought from a large chain retailer with their name on the box. They are difficult to sharpen but seem to hold an edge. Perhaps S&W is renting out their name.

I wonder what is the best way to sharpen a new set.I assume i just can't strop it and get a good edge?

It's really hard to give advice without seeing what those bevel angles are. If they are in the 20 to 30 degree range, perhaps some work by hand with medium then fine grit stones, followed by a good stropping will do the job.

From what I've seen in similar Buck Brothers, and some of the newer Stanley tools, the bevels are ground WAY too steep, near 45 degrees, so would have to be re-ground. If that's the case, you could do the grind yourself if you feel competent or give them to a pro to do for you.
