Nice looking bench that you have there but I can't seem to determine what kind of wood it is from the photo. The growth rings on the end of the bench appear to show some rapid growth species... perhaps a southern pine. On the other hand I've also seen some maple that bright of a color. Inquiring minds have just gotta know!

I can't imagine life without my shaving horse and keep one on the porch and another in the shop. I used a design from an old 1970's Rodale Press book titled "Country Woodcraft" by Drew Langsner. Added this book to my library back in the early 80's and have just about wore it out!
Backyard sawmills are all over the place 'round here which is where I came across some black locust so I expect my shaving horses to last, well.... near forever. Locust is about as close to "steel" that I can find for wood... some tough stuff!
