Default Shaving Bench

I put together this shaving horse as a prototype for our students. I've not had much chance to use it as our temperatures have dipped considerably. I'd like to hear folks' thoughts.

That looks like a real dandy bench! Wish I had one myself, would be just the ticket for cane shaft smoothing. Got me to thinking!

Sweet! I have always wanted a shaving mule/horse...

I saw one of THESE in action, and it is quite nice... The horse 'head' is adjustable with a wedge, so it is easy and fast to adjust!

Both shaving horses look great..they serve the purpose for holding a walking stick while shaving it down or a shovel handle..anything long and cylindrical...

Joy... I have no idea who the old dude on the bench is. I picked up a packet of old time post cards at the visitor's center at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountain Park and he was in it. My wife and I just thought that the pictures of old settlers were neat and we eventually framed them and hung them up in our cabin. Between pictures like this and old tools and kitchen utensils our cabin is decorated in early "Cracker Barrell"!!! Ha! Ha!

Nice looking bench that you have there but I can't seem to determine what kind of wood it is from the photo. The growth rings on the end of the bench appear to show some rapid growth species... perhaps a southern pine. On the other hand I've also seen some maple that bright of a color. Inquiring minds have just gotta know! It also seems to be of a similar design such as that on: http://www.greenwoodworking.com/shorse.htm I like that type of holding device as mine is of the more traditional type.

I can't imagine life without my shaving horse and keep one on the porch and another in the shop. I used a design from an old 1970's Rodale Press book titled "Country Woodcraft" by Drew Langsner. Added this book to my library back in the early 80's and have just about wore it out!

Backyard sawmills are all over the place 'round here which is where I came across some black locust so I expect my shaving horses to last, well.... near forever. Locust is about as close to "steel" that I can find for wood... some tough stuff!

Thanks for sharing the picture!

Have you used it yet?

It looks like there might be too much angle so that the stick or whatever you shave sticks up at an uncomfortable angle.
