Hello I seem to put a very small bend in the tip of my detail knife and it scratches the wood as i carve. How can i sharpen it with out a stone. Thanks Cheech |

Scary Sharp (Google it or look for related postings here) with sandpaper in diminishing coarse grits and then hone it with strop & fine abrasive powder or stropping paste.

Yep, great way to start on sharpening. I'd still be using it more than I do, but got tired of replacing paper.

Some advice: Scary sharp is the way to go, I agree. But, to remove the bent portion, do not try to sharpen back the cutting edge until it bend is gone. Instead, grind away the back of the blade near the tip, creating a new tip and making the blade just a bit shorter. Much easier to do, and you won't get your blade so narrow it loses strength. I have had to do this 3 times to my flexcut detail knife, after dropping on the concrete floor. After the third time, I went down to Woodcraft and bought a rubber floor mat to put in front of my carving bench. My knife is about 1/2 inch shorter than when it was new, but it still works just fine. Claude |

Just take it easy and don't over heat the blade when/if you grind the tip. It burns very quickly.

| ...no pun intended, Dave? LOL. I'm with Claude on this one. Both of my knives are shorter and slightly changed shape to my preference by taking it down from the backside...using sandpaper on glass as already mentioned. Last night one knife slipped a little and dinged the point on the table...time to go another tenth shorter.... |
