Default Seahorse Whittler as a Whittling Knife

Y'all probably recall that I've not been impressed with the Case Seahorse Whittler as a whittling knife mostly because of the shape and size of the Wharnclife blade. Well, there is one form of whittling where it is excellent. Flat plane carving. The extreme width of the blade tends to keep it from turning contributing to the long flat planes this form of carving is known for. While the extra wide back of the blade provides extra comfort for the pushing thumb.

Did Ya get another one for your birthday. I have one also but don't carve with it. Just collects dust like a lot of my other knives. I have an older Hen&Rooster whittler that I use a lot when I am away from the shop. I also have an old Mcgraw Stockman that I bought from Sears years ago. Its been a great whittlin knife. It says craftsman on the bolster but the Blade is stamped McGraw. Got any automatics I have been collecting them for years. Getting harder to get leagaly. But I do still find one once in while. Have you ever seen a whittler with a damascus steel blade?

No, no automatics. Had a couple, but passed them on years ago for almost nothing (big dummy). Didn't get a seahorse for my bday - guess everybody figured I had enough, 94 at last count (quite a few dupes). Need two more, the CCC Burnt Stag club knife and the Cristmas Tree jiigged to complete the colection. Probably my favorite whittling knife is a Hen and Rooster whittler, but also like the Boker whittler and the WeidmanSheil whittler and can't leave out the Rick modified Kershaw double cross. Got more whittlers than I know what to do with. Wouldn't have it any other way.

I carry a Seahorse whittler "just in case" but it really isn't a comfortable knife for me. I lengthened the bevels on it and it cuts better than with the factory edge but not as good as my flat ground blades. I have reground a number of my home-made carving knives to flatten the blade and remove the bevels and it made a noticable difference. If you have carving knives that don't seem to perform, I am betting that Rick could regrind them for you.

Goody,
I got an old Schrade Walden auto with 1 1/4, 1 1/2 inch razor sharpe blades. It was my wifes grandfathers, he used it to carve chains and such. [NFS]
Believe it or not automatics are legal here in AZ. They got em down at the local mall, right out in the front glass case for all the kids to oogle. You just cannot conceal them, they have to be carried on a belt clip; this is what the sales girl told me. No whittlers, mostly outdoor type or real nice German/ solingen hunters. From what I saw they start at $250.00, out of my price range.

Oh well some things just strike me funny. Shouldn't have responded and this would have stayed on the forum longer.

Right on. First thing I did was take the belt sander to it and although I didn't take it all the way flat, took it about 75% of the way there. I learned long ago that factory bevels are no good on most knives. The best favor you can do yourself is before you even use it, change the bevels.
