Default sandpaper question

Good morning! Question, what number silicon carbide paper would I want to use to sharpen my knife before I strop?

My flex strop has the leather of course on one side, and the paper on the other.

I'm particularly new to carving, but I am new to using good knives that need sharpening. any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jon

If the knife is carving sharp right from the factory (and many are), all you need to do is just keep stropping it. If it's "sharp" but not "carving sharp", then get some sandpaper from an automotive paint supplier - 2000 grit should work fine. Here's one example of a place that sells it: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...T|GRP2006_____

Ditto Claude.
I finished my west coast planer knife blade with 1500 grit automotive wet&dry paper. To be honest, that isn't quite good enough. Honing after that helps but not as much as I expected.
