Default The Rock Work Holding Device

Hi All, got my Rock holding device a couple weeks ago. It's all mounted on my workbench and I used it for the first time today. I'm roughing out a 8 inch by 6 inch block of butternut, which will be a mountain man head.

I just wanted to report that the Rock holding device worked just great. Because I'm 5'4 the actual height of the Rock on my worktable was perfect. I can see where some of you taller guys and gals might want a taller shaft mount. The knob works well and holds good and tight. There may come a time I may have to replace it, as threads wear with use.
Anyway just wanted to report my findings.

Thank you again all who gave me their opinions about work holders.
Kathy

Kathy I have been using my Rock work positioner for about three years now and haven't had any problems with the threads or anything else. If you look back through the archives of work tables you will also see where I made a table for doing reliefs. It is 24X24 with adjustable slides to hold the work. I have an extra spindle mounted on it so all I have to do is remove one and replace with another. It works out great because you can tilt it wherever you need to be comfortable. Enjoy yours!
Ron

Thanks for the review on your new wood holding device. I have one that I got cheap...and as a result it tends to turn in the stem. I do like that I can adjust the stem up and down, and I can move the whole device along my work area just by releasing a clamp. I'll have to take a look at this holder you purchased as it sounds like it does the trick.

Hi Ron & Patrick, thank you both for your replys and input. Ron your relief table sounds like a good one. I did go back threw the threads in this forum, but I couldn't find it. I appreciate you telling me about your experiences with your Rock.
Patrick, I really think for the money the Rock is a good product and will serve my uses well. I highly recommend this product and hope to have my for many years. Yes, it does the trick. I bought mine at http://www.woodcarverssupply.com/store/

Does your rock hold up to some heavy blows? would you put a piece on there 4 to 6 inches thick by 14 to 16 inches long( half log)?

Hi, I have some logs that I plan to carve using the Rock. As for heavy blows haven't had to do them yet, so can't say. Here is the info on the Rock....

Hi Kathy, I've had mine for about 2 yrs. and like it very much. The price is what attracted me to it. Most others are priced out of site for me. The Rock Positioner does a great job. I mounted mine on a piece of Scrap board that will fit in my bench vise, that way it is out of the way if I'm not using it. You made a good choice. Merle

Hi Merle, thank you for giving us your experiences with the 'Rock' and I have to agree I think for the money it will do the job. Having it portable is a good idea especially if you need the space. fortunately, my work table is about 8 feet long and 5 feet in width. So it can remain on the corner of the table and still give me plenty of working room. It's so nice not to have to hold onto the carving with your hands. Sure makes for better steadiness specially on those cold mornings in the garage shop. Talking Actually, I do have a heater, but it's that time spent waiting for things to warm up. LOL
Thanks again, for your comments.
Kathy

Hi Kathy, Did you notice that your tools feel sharper when your piece is clamped down? Merle

Thumbs Up Hi Merle, now that you mention it, yes they do especially my mallet tools. Haven't got around to using the palm tools on it yet. I think I'm going to order or make another couple heads for the Rock. I usually always have a couple projects going at the same time....then I could switch back and forth.
