Default Riffler Files

Does anybody use Riffler Files ? Do they work ? I see them advertized but have never heard anybody mention using them.. I have used files on metal but would think they would 'clog up' when used on wood. ???

I've used rifflers on almost all my carvings; mostly for clean-up work in tight spots. I have not tried the diamond rifflers yet, but plan to pick a set up the next time I'm in a carving store! Have heard they work better than the steel ones. The coarde ones, I have trouble working with as they are too small to hang onto when pushing those BIG teeth around. They are not a substitute for any knives or gouges, but an adjunct to the other tools. Try 'em you'll like 'em!

Also try checkering tools for background in relief, etc.

Yes they do fill up, but if you keep a small brass bristle brush handy, no problem.

If you ever get to carving harder woods like maple or cherry you'll really appreciate those rifflers

Although they are not the highest quality, Harbor Freight carries sets of 5 and 10 riffler files (Chinese made) for a few dollars. Â*They work pretty good for me. Â*I also bought a set of diamond files there for just a bit more. Â*Go to http://www.harborfreight.com . Â*I did not find them on their website so you may need to request a catalog. Beware however that the carving tools they sell are just horrible and a complete waste of money. Â*They also carry several sets of diamond burrs for you power carvers. Â*They seem to be the exact same ones carried by the big woodworking supply outfits but at about 1/2 the price.

Two things. First, while Harbor Freight does carry CHEAP tools, they are extremely low quality and will probably not last too long. My rule of thumb is: if it has moving parts, get it somewhere else. Second, rifflers are a type of file, and though a brass brush will work, you really ought to use a file card. Get one at a hardware store for a few bucks and it will last you the rest of your life. Â* Â*

ps: do NOT EVER buy an anvil from Harbor freight. They are cast iron and will chip(read:saftey hazard).

This a catalog that I used to get; I haven't received it for a while. It used to have anvils, swage-blocks, tongs, hammers and even tools for your hardy hole.

I just bought a few rifflers, after hearing about them on this board. I got the very fine ones - and wow, they ARE wonderful for doing cleanup, etc.
