| | A request for advice and assistance Hello
I just now walked through the door of this forum. I don't know how things work here. Help me out will you please?
I am not really a carver at least certainly not exclusively. I carve wood constantly but it's not always traditional artistic endeavours.
In fact the local art community doesn't really know me at all. They kind of thnk I'm the old man of something but they can't quite get a handle on me. They all paint canvas and so forth. Maybe some ceramic lately, paper mache and assemble sculpture. But the things I create don't even register even though personally I kind of think they are a little artistic if you know the histories and progress of man in my area. Might like to check my site sometime....
So I have this thing. It's a carving thing and it's never been seen before and some of you would flip and some would likely be irritated but regardless you can't say you ever saw it before. It's not on my site. Another address at the moment.
But I could send it. I don't want to be accused of shilling. Wouldn't want that. It's like I got a tiny precious amount of killer wet dream stuff here but we don't talk that way on the list, or do we?

| | Re: A request for advice and assistance Welcome aboard, Scott. It's great to have another galoot toolmaker around here. Some of these guys are pretty good at making knives, and appreciate the deeper satisfaction of using a tool you made. Not everyone, though, so we have some opportunity here to spread the galoot doctrine.
What I've seen is, there's plenty of room for unconventional stuff, and those who like it will say so. Some darn good carvers hang around this forum, and folks here seem to be interested in unique approaches. Carving tools are kinda specialized, but I think tools like yours would be welcome anywhere. I wonder how many members realize the advantages of having custom toolmakers available on the forum - I haven't seen any discussion about it.
I've never seen a sale section on this site like they have on some others. I also don't recall "buy-n-sell" posts being specificly prohibited in the member agreement. Once in a while, somebody posts something for sale and doesn't seem to get spanked. Rick at Littleshavers does a brisk sharpening business that gets frequent mention, and a couple wood suppliers too. But, the website owners also have a magazine, which sells advertising, and I'm sure they'd like commercial entities to go that route with them. Also, understandably, the members don't want to get buried in commercial posts.
Personally, carving is one of my hobbies and I joined the forum with that in mind. However, I have invented (and continue to invent) some rather "custom" carving tools. So far, I think I've been pretty discreet. When I have a quantity of masterpieces made up, I plan to post a message saying "here's what I made" and some pics, and say PM me if you're interested. So far, it seems like that's okay, especially if we keep it in the tools and sharpening section. Look for my thread tonight as a test case, and we'll see if I survive it.
Parker

| | Re: A request for advice and assistance Scott, I ain't gonna be a buyin' but if I were to be, those are just too durn purty ta use! I've restored a few old tools to usable condition and mostly they stay safely tucked away on the tool wall. Once in a while I'll take out that old brace or breast drill to crank out a hole, or that old savaged plane to joint a couple boards, and even the old USFS adz that I picked up for 5 bucks because some fool broke the handle and whoever was in charge thought it was either easier or chaper to buy another (with my tax dollars) than to hang a new handle on this one. Dang fool!

But the thing is, unless you let your St Bernard chew on it for considerable time, you can't hurt these mallets with ordinary work. I have one I've pounded big mortice and corner chisels with, big firmers and gouges with too. No not polite little tapping, pounded! You can't even tell.
It's the other part of the beauty. Nearly indestructable. Even the top cap the mallet rests on when sitting upright is polished and blued because no paint could stand up to that duty and would chip eventually.
Built for comfort AND speed!
Yo ho Silver! One of my boys lives in Eureka. If you ever worked the night shift on the job, you know him! Denny's downtown, Dimitri.
My grandchildren and my great grand baby are there too. Nice town.

| | Re: A request for advice and assistance Scott, I'm glad you posted your site so I could see your mallets. I haven't used a mallet for wood yet, but I do have a couple of rolled leather mallets for leather craft. I think if I were to use them for wood, the head would fly off in record time. Yours are beautiful.

| | Re: A request for advice and assistance Hello, nice mallet.Idon`t want to let the air out of your tires but I have those in many different sizes.I am a saddle maker by trade and the leather tool makers have been making them for years. I use mine for leather and wood carving. They work great and they will last for ever.Very nice work. You should try to promote those to the leather comunity. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
