Hey Everybody, Thank you to everyone who replied to my post on Chris Pye's list with Stubai tools. There's a lot to think about, though I am fairly certain that I would be most comfortable using full-size tools. Here's another question that's been rattling around my brain: what mallets do you guys use/recommend? I've seen so many different mallets while I've been doing my research that my head is spinning. It seems, perhaps even more than with tools, that mallets are a matter of personal preference. Since I have no experience in selecting a mallet, I'm wondering what you guys like or look for in a mallet, what woods, weight, length, etc.? Thanks for the continuing help, Michael |

Michael, you are right! Just like Knives, try the mallet...if possible. I did not think they were very different and just ordered one. I am ok with it now, but, had to modify the handle.

Mallets are another adventure in finding a mix of comfort, style and fit to your carving style. I have and use: a traditional hardwood (Lignem Vite(sp?) carvers mallet, a small bronze topped mallet and a Japanese round barrel shaped mallet. Each has it's own applications, but I find the Japanese barrel mallet the best mix of weight, balance and comfort for my hand, for relief carving. There are some conditions where I find the small bronze mallet a better fit, usually in a in the round carving, as well as the hardwood traditional mallet. I suppose trial and error is you best method of selection, and it would be nice if there was a carving group who's members have an assortment between them to try. Lots of different weights and shapes to experiment with. Bob
