Default Recommendations for starter tools, please

Hey folks, I have recently joined the site here, and my primary interests are in Twisted Sticks..... canes and staffs. I have just been finishing these with no carvings. However, I am interested in learning to carve on them..... and have a couple of Dremels, one with a flex shaft. But, I'd like to check out using knives and gouges, etc. ( I've used a Utility Knife a little). I'm a school teacher in south Arkansas, so spendable cash is kept on a leash, but I'd like to get some suggestions from you pros on starter sets, or tools that I could begin learning from. (This will help me make some pointed hints to my wife for my birthday! LOL)

Thanks for any and all help!

Kim Allen

Some of the best, (in my opinion). Drake Knives.com

Also a good deal. http://www.littleshavers.com/StartupKit.html

do you see yourself sitting on the porch working with a piece of wood and a tool on your lap, or standing in the studio/workshop with a sturdy bench and a mallet ?

Thanks, folks........ I've looked at the referenced sites provided and really like what I saw. It looks like I can get starter sets of knives and gouges for about $150.00 or less.

wDonkey, I've got a small shop area with one of those folding leg tables set up for my Dremel tools. Most of my carving is probably going to be with the smaller tools. I don't see myself needing to go to a mallet.

At this time, I'm starting to work with Walking staffs and canes..... some Twisties involved, but I want to learn to carve on them some. I can't even imagine myself doing some of the intricate work that I've seen on this site, but hope to get better as time and the Lord may allow.

Thanks to all of you who have offered your help.
