Question Qustions about Carvers vise

I have been wanting one for some time and have finally decided to buy a carvers vice, my questions are what do ya all use. I have done all of my carvings to date just simply holding them with my hands or legs. I plan on building a stand to mount it to and wanted to know how to find the right distance from the floor? with a wood lathe you go around 4 inches above your elbow for the centers of the lathe. Any ideas are welcome I will post pics when it is done I plan to use it mainly for mallet work and larger projects. Thanks in advance.

Ya might look at this home made vise. Several of us has built one similar to this and mine works great. Maybe $10 worth of parts in it.

Talking Re: Qustions about Carvers vise

Well I got my stand built and a woodworking vise added it has three shelves and weighs enough I shouldn't have to add any more. I wil lmount my carving arms on top. 20" x 20" top and 40" tall.

The bench is almost done now I have added my new carving vise, my magnifier light, some mallet shelves and I stacked some wood and bark on there.

Hey Carl,

It looks like you are ready for some serious carving. What are you planning for your first big carving with your new mallet gouges?

Nice set up.
