| | Re: Question: Sharpening V tool I think this is normal, atleast I always get the same thing. What I do is use diamond hone to take of the little hook. Is the inside/outside slighhtly rounded ? If it is then thats why you get the little hook, the rounded off part not getting as much honing as the flat bevels. I hope its that simple to fix anyway! |

| | Re: Question: Sharpening V tool What you are seeing is the material thickness of the bottom of the V.
The solution is to apply the same bevel to the radius as you have created on the two sides.
Sharpen it like a tiny gouge.
************************************************** *****
If you end up with the opposite condition ie. a void at the bottom of the V, you have removed too much material from the radius.
The solution is to grind the tools cutting edge back to eliminate the void and then resharpen it.
Good luck |

| | Re: Question: Sharpening V tool Check Chris Pye's site and there is a tutorial on sharpening the v tool. Key to getting the "point" off is grinding the keel first. Here's a sketch of the keel grind. That should be ground back to meet the bevels on both wings. Pye, suggests, like Rick, if the bevels are too misalligned, to grind the cutting edge square and then re-do all the bevels. I thinkthis "keel grind: is the same thing as Rick defined as grinding the radius back. Hope this helps.

| | Re: Question: Sharpening V tool Your drawing was quite good, I ran into the same problem this summer as I made 10 small V-tools. I looked at some brand name V-tools and the bulk of them just had a flat spot in the area where the protuding tooth would be. I had a friend sharpen one for me and he just rounded it to remove the tooth so now that v-tool cuts like a Veiner which is ok as I don't have a veiner that size. I have had various results at fixing the rest of them, using mainly diamond hones, I use them just like you would a file.
In the last two years I have made at least 150 woodcarving tools and the V-tools I've made or tried to make are VERY difficult to make and HARDER to sharpen..

without knowing better i would suspect that the bottom of the v is harder than the sides, but thats only my feelings,
too bad someone has'nt come up with a small kind of surface grinder simular to those in machine shop... where the tool could be held in proper position and slowly surfaced..
thanks for the info

How about using 400 grit emery paper to take the point off? You might have a better shot at it since you'll have more control and can see it a little better since there's no machine involved. |

| | Re: Question: Sharpening V tool Rick,
it took me a few seconds to grasp the concept of sharpening the v tool like a gouge but i got the idea now,
Im going to get some of those cheapies from harbor freight to practice on, $4.00 for 4 of them,
AlArchie
Chris Pye's site ? do you have a link for that site?
After reading your reply, i cought the concept that rick mentioned.
it was like i was stuck in the 4th demention or something,,, lost...
now maybe if i can duplicate the information i can start using my v tools and fix the ones i have messed up, i got some loo'-loo's to fix
thanks again

But I think you will have to pay to unlock the the "total" downloaded "V" tool book, it's just the first few pages that are free, all the good stuff about sharpening the "V" tool will cost you . .
