Question question on favorite tool?

If you were stranded on an deserted island ( I know, not an imaginative question ) and you were only allowed a knife and two other choices from your carving tools, which knife and two tools would you choose? remember there is no power on this island and by tools , I am refering to gouges, chisels and the like. I ask this question because I was carving last night and was wondering what tools are really indispensible to a carvers arsenal. Each person must have their favorite hand tools that they couldn't do or wouldn't want to do without.

thanks,

Darren

Darren ,
Fun question.
I am assuming you also mean I can't have a jack knife .

My flexcut detail knife , my d15/8 skew , and my 7/10 fishtail.

Now for fun , you could always consider the making of new tools. Clam shells can be sharpened pretty quick on rocks to give a cutting edge. If there is lava rocks you can use the chip method to make new knives and saws. Then by using fine sand you have finishing material. Of course if you want to get really fancy and you have the resources, fire and enough lumber you can turn the sand into glass and make glass knives, although a lot of work it can be done. The building of a small forge is pretty simple, the ammount of usable timber would be the trick, but if you have enough for firewood you can use rocks to make a pretty good fire forge. And the forge would serve you better than an open fire as the heat is much better.

Well "Old Reliable" would be there of course, along with a pencil and a coping saw. Naturally, this is assuming that this island is populated by Basswood trees that have died and seasoned. If it was just the normal deserted island with only palms and coconuts I'd forsake the carving tools and concentrate on the boatload of "Babes" that washed up with me!!

The Gonzalez hooked skew by Ashley Iles; it has replaced a large number of my other tools. The only thing it can't do well is cut deep chanels live a veiner...

Choosing only three, huh? They probably wouldn't be my favorites, since choosing only two gouges would have to be a compromise. I'd have my Helvie, detail or regular, as my knife. I'd take a #7 x 1/2" (or even a little larger), and make it a fishtail to make it more verstatile. The second would be a #3 or #5 x 5/8", also a fishtail. The first thing I'd do would be to make a strop, since these tools are going to get dull in a hurry! Mike

I think I'd opt for my Swiss Army knife (camper), a medium sized gutter adz and a hand axe. Let's face it, the first order of importance is to survive. I've done a lot of carving with that SA knife and a small axe and adz could be used for both necessity and recreational carving!

Al,
Good choices!
I was going to list an adz as one of mine. I have one designed for making bowls but it's large enough to do a lot more. With it and a good axe you could do a lot of large carvings as well as build shelter and lots of other things. I might switch my swiss army knife for my flexcut multi-tool pocketknife (I forget what it's called) but it'd be a tough choice!
