| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools The only complaint I heard about HT was that they were not very sharp. Well, the same with Robert Sorby and many others. They expect you to finish sharpening them. Did any of you know you should also dress a new hammer before you use it? And most axes need a LOT of sharpening before you use it? I know I sent a letter of complaint to Robert Sorby when I bought my mallet set. They were very kind and actually sent me another vee tool because I messed up the one in the set trying to sharpen it. ![006[1]](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/006[1].gif)

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools I have several HT's, and I must admit they are not my favorite tools. I had a real problem sharpening them, the bevel was the problem, their factory bevel was all wrong for the type of wood I was carving and I could never get good results. So I sent them to Rick who fixed them up for me. They cut much better, but they still aren't my favorites. I just find the shafts too long.

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools Having sharpened several sets of Henry Taylor tools I find the temper fairly consistant.
I have even sharpened two sets of the Cogelow Skew Gouges (lots of fun).
Taylor tools are not as refined as Pfiel tools; they leave the shanks as-cast which is pretty rough.
They do leave the draw coloring on the ground surfaces as evidence of their consistant temper.
I find the Taylor tools bulky, rough, and awkward to use due to their length and thickness.
Woodcraft is discounting their Henry Taylor tools due to a newly negotiated agreement with Pfeil.

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools I am not particularly bothered by the finish or roughness of the HT's . In fact I like seeing the rough exterior finish.
I have all the major brands and like them all. I have however a slightly higher affinity for the old buck brothers tools. They are very roughly finished also but I have several gouges that will cut twice as long before sharpening is required.
I have several tools whose shape I really like but have relegated the tool to the rummage sale box because they will not hold an edge. Is there any way of finding out if they can be salvaged by retempering? |

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools I'm a bit of a tool junky/collector. My favorites are the old Addis. That said, I think a lot of folks are missing the boat, at least on palm tools, by overlooking the Ramelsons. Great tools for the $. Look closely at the picutres in magazines and books and you'll find that a lot of the "name" carvers use them. |

If Rick can't fix it, they don't deserve to be fixed! Really, send them to Rick! You won't get a better tool or deal in this life! |
