| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools HT carving tools have a reputation of inconsistant heat treatment. Some are fine and others are not great.
I believe the Pfiel Swiss tools have a new reduced retail price at the Woodcraft Supply chain stores and are a better carving tool.

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools As the owner of 80 plus Henry Taylor full size gouges and chisels bought at various times from a number of different tool suppliers over 30 years I have never found Henry Tools to be inconsistant in their heat treatment.
Having said that , it is true that any manufacturer can produce a faulty tool, that goes for Pfiel as well as "all" of the other major carving tool manufacturers available today.
If a tool has a fault then send it back to the manufacturer, to the best of my knowledge Henry Taylor will replace any of their tools that has any fault as will most other reputable manufacturers.
If the price is right for you then buy the Henry Taylors. .

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools I have never heard that HT tools had inconsistent heat treatment. As a metallurgical engineer, I am more willing to believe that the engineers who design the operating processes for HT are more qualified to determine the quality of the tool than the average wood carver. Having said that, I do not own a single HT tool. However, I do own a set of 12 Robert Sorby full size tools, 12 micro tools and about 40 pfeil tools. I also prefer the pfeil tools for basswood. However, the English tools are better suited for hardwoods like oak.

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools I also have a set of Henry Taylor gouges and chisels. I haven't noticed any problems keeping an edge or anything else wrong with them. I wouldn't be afraid of buying more if I needed them. |

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools Hello,
I bought a half dozen Henry Taylor palm tools about two years ago. I had them about two weeks before I posted them on ebay for 1.00 each. At 1.00, they were over priced, in my opinion. I did not like them at all. I now have Pfeil and Denny palm tools, and they are of the highest possible quality. Woodcrafts prices on full size Pfeil tools are very competetive right now, I would stick wioth them for pushing the tools by hand. For mallet use in harder woods, Stubai tools cannot be topped.
Good Carving,
Dan Heine

| | Re: quality of henry taylor tools heineda, by golly if'n at anytime in the future you happen to find yourself with any of those awfull HT tools you just drop me a line and I'll take all you got at $1.00 per tool, hell even if you ruined the temper I'll still take em at $1.00 and gladly pay the US exchange rate too, but please do it private I don't want all the other carvers out there who know a good deal when they see it to hear about it.
BTW everyone is entitled to an opinion, even none HT lovers. .
