| | Re: protective carving glove I find it hard working with a mask. When I am sanding or using the bandsaw, I keep a jar of petrolum jelly handy ,put a small blob in each nostril. It eliminates the itching & stuffiness like a filter. |

| | | Re: protective carving glove I took your advice and found a carving glove. I haven't shoved a blade at my fingers since, lol. After two stab wounds from a veiner tool, I decided the next one may be really bad. I think it was worth the few dollar investment. The thought of your 42 stitches wasa real motivator. Thanks.

| | | Re: protective carving glove MikeD,..... Just remember that a glove is NOT a protect-all, a tool with a point can still penatrate and puncture you.
Carve smart and try to keep the blade pointed away from you. (Not always possible if you hold the work in your hand like I usually to do.)
Just want you to remember, NOTHING will make working with sharp tools totally safe. The best safety tool you can own, is good , safe, work practices. (Don't learn the hard way like I did.) After all, everyone says that they know better than to cut toward themselves, but when they get busy, they sometimes forget to practice those safety rules : : |

| | Re: protective carving glove I have found the protective tape that you get from Woodcraft works fairly well to keep the knives out of my thumb. It is a green tape that only sticks to itself, it is heavy like medical tape, so it guards well.
It is only a few bucks but saves on stich money. :'( |

| | | Re: protective carving glove Hey Musky sucker,
First of all, welcome to the message board, and I'm also glad to hear that this topic is helping to make carvers (old and new) think about safety while enjoying their favorite pastime?
Make your doctor late on his yacht payment, wear protective equipment and practice safe work habits when carving.
Also, if you are power carving or operating a wood lathe don't forget to wear a resporator.
Protect your lungs!!! |
