I was poking back through the archives of the tools section, and found some posts from a few years ago by Uncle Rick that he had built this work holder. However, he hasn't posted here for nearly two years. So, if you are out there or if anyone else has built this, I am interested in how it has worked out. Or if anyone has this issue can you describe it for me? I am looking for a good solution for holding hiking sticks for carving, and trying to decide if I want to purchase this back issue for the plan.

Thanks Bob. I'll check this thread out. I was hoping someone who might have that particular issue of the "other" mag might be able to describe it for me. But I guess no one here on this forum has it.

So this isn't exactly in the "portable" vein but I was eyeing Greg Wilkerson's site and came across his stick carving jig which holds the stick vertically and I think it looks really nice. I grabed the pic from his site to post below (is this ok to do btw? Wasn't sure about the ethics of that move) but you can see it in the original context here ->

Does anyone know where one can find a "front loading vise" like he shows? Looks really nice. I suppose one could use a rotating/swivel type pipe vise for a similar effect but they all seem kinda pricey. I like that this can be set up on a bench or table for a vertical orientation and I like his additional support that he added up above that.

Thoughts?
