I bet on and won a Seahorse Whittler early this week on E-bay. Got it in the mail today. I just need to take the time to put it to the stones. It looks like it'll be a nice knife for larger works. But I think Mitch is right, the Wharncliff blade is pretty large. Still keeping my eye out for a Congress knife. There are a few on E-bay that I'm watching. I'm also toying with the Bear that Cliff mentioned to us. Decisions, decisions!

I'm happy to say that it wasn't me. I was looking for one for the blades and couldn't see spending big bucks on color. My wife would not be amused if I had spent what some of these knives go for. I'm going to save spending big bucks for something more important, pick your battles I always say!

So I watched the auctions and bid on one that wasn't moving much. I got a key lime green one with plain bolsters for $37. That's about $15 less than I've seen Sea Horse Whittlers elsewhere.

Well I just won one for 29.99, but they won't accept anything but pay pal! I told them I would send a pers chk or money order but that wasn't good enough! I got 7 virus from pay pal from a phony email, so I am not about to put my personal banking info in someones hands that can't protect their people better than that! Any way, this seller was just put out because I opened the bid and was the only bidder....greed rears its ugly head again! lol, well the knife will be showing up again.....amazing how they cover up the real motive....more money, because if I sent a check or money order, they don't mail the item until they clear, so seller is out nothing! Oh well, seems to be the way of this country anymore, lie about it and then blame someone else to justify your position.....lets go back to the 50's!!

Hay it actualy cost the seller to accept pay-pal too.
so they would be out more by accepting it.

When I first started carving I used a Schrade 330T Middleman Jack, which is a GREAT 2 blade knife(High Carbon Steel Blades, easier to sharpen than stainless.) Recently I bought myself a Case Seahorse Whittler ($35 from Eknifeworks.com, which is a steal for a Case. This one has red Delrin handles and a stars & stripes shield. It's listed under "American Workman Case Seahorse Whittler). It tool a while to sharpen all 3 of the blades, but once I did get it sharpened it's an incredible knife, very comfortable fit in my hand.

That leaves a maximum of 429 of that particular knife (case item #05311) left in mint condition. There were only 430 of those manufactured. Go buy yourself another one and set it aside. Anybody interested in a user Seahorse scout around for and Autumn Bone (7250 made), a corn cob jigged blue bone (6600 made), or a vintage bone (5400 made).

I like 'em (I'd better, I've got 67 of them), but not for whittling. I prefer the Kershaw Double Cross as modified by Rick for that application.

I haven't gotten the whittlin' books yet, but does anyone know if Lubkemann recommends a particular knife (or style) in either of his books? I saw the chicken carving program on DIY, and have a couple "Y" branches at home, just waiting for me to get started!

... just curious ... The one he used in the program looks a lot like a swiss army knife!

Thanks!

Last I read he uses a modified "Tinker" model Swiss Army Knife. One without the corkscrew. Before that he used a Schade something or other.

Hey Ed,

Do you know how many of the Case XX Red Silver Script Seahorse Whittler 6355WH SS were produced in 2004? I just got one off ebay for $35. If more of these were produced than the American Workman Whittler that I bought, I'll put the American Workamn back in its box and use this one instead
