| | Pocket knife blades For those that modify pocket knives and pocket knife blades for carving, I've a question or two. I have two Camillus pocket knives. Both are at least 20 years old. One is the Cub Scout knife has a large blade, an awl type blade, and a combination screw driver cap opener balde. The other has the same blade configuration, but one more that appears to be a can opener; but is a plain Camillus pocket knife.
Which blade is usually cut/ground down into a carving blade?
When this is done is the blade reset into a new carving handle or left "in" the pocket knife? Both knives are in great condition. Is it worth the effort to reshape the blades?

| | Re: Pocket knife blades I'm having a little problem picturing the knives you're talking about. I've modified quite a number of pockete knives. I usually do one of the smaller blades, usually into a Wharncliffe style, and maybe tweek the large one a bit. I always leave them in the pocket knife. |

| | Re: Pocket knife blades Tom, I'd leave that old Cub Scout knife alone. You can pick up a new whittler for around 13 bucks fromthe BSA supply in mid may. A good knife for a good price and it's designed for carving. Whittler&
I'm not trying to sell these things...just forwarding some options.
Why wreck a classic Cub Scout knife for carving when there are good ones available for next to nothing. Even if you go to the hardware store you can pick up a good three blade whittler for arouind 40 bucks.

| | Re: Pocket knife blades Yeah, I wouldn't recommend moding that for whittling. Way too much work. You can get a really good whittler on ebay for around 10 bucks. Look for a Rough Rider, Steel Warrior, or U.S. Classic whittler. I've got maybe two dozen of them and they are great knives for the money. Another option is a Tinker Swiss Army knife with a modified small blade. Believe it or not, the make a great whittler. They sell in Wal-Mart for something like 15 dollars. If you want a used one here's a good place to get it. FelineVet Shop - SOSAK - Home
He's got a lot of stuff that isn't listed so an email to him is sometimes in order. He's a charitable organization, so I don't mind posting a link.
Here's a Tinker with the small blade modded and the keyring attachment removed. Some of the other models will work also, just don't get one with a corkscrew. |

| | Re: Pocket knife blades I really should have posted a photo of these knives. Here it is, late! I appreciate the information you all are giving me. I think it might have been Rick at LITTLE SHAVERS that once said "why take a $50 pocket knife and make a $30 carving knife out of it". I am not suggesting that either of these knives are worth any money. Just curious, bout knife makin I guess.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't use any folding knife for whittling that didn't have a locking blade...
