PFEIL "Swiss Made" Brienz Carver's Knife

I was recently in the Woodcraft store and recieved two different opinions from the sales guys, one good one average.
I can't paste the link but I'm referring to Product Number: 123013. I thought this knife would be good for relief carving, and whittling because of it's versatility. The one thing I do respect about the sales people is they do give you an honest opinion regarding their product and type of carving you are doing.

I ended up buying a Rick Butz detail knife. I just wanted to know if anyone owns this knife or has an opinion on it.

I have both the small and large Pfeil Brienz knives. Â*In my opinion they are a very nice general wood working bench knife but not very suited to carving. Â*The blade is rather wide and the hollow grind is not my favorite for wood.

I use mine mainly for cutting up foam core (inexpensive covers for knife blades and small chisels), thin wood veneers and other straight line cuts. Â*It tracks a straight cut nicely due to long shallow angle relative to the spine.

The Butz detail knife is very nice for its intended use,,,,,it will take some work to reprofile the edge to remove the secondary bevel. I used DMT diamond hones and it took some time,,,well worth the effort, nice tough steel in the blade and very comfortable handle design.

I got to spend some time talking with the gentleman from Quackwood Knives while I was at the ICC. He seemed interesting and was willing to make custom handles for knifes (With my long fingers, that's always a quetion for me.) Has anyone else heard about his knives? He's got a lot of different shapes.

If you've got large hands like some of us out here, why don't you get a couple warren or murphy blades and make you own. That way you can make the handle exactly like you want it and it won't cost you a whole lot. Well, maybe could cost you a lot, because it could get addicting.

Already doing that. I've made some out of files and actually got some 'german steel' from a guy I used to get wood from. He saves all his old de-barking blades from his sawmill and gives them out to people. I don't know what they're hardened to, but they are tough to put an edge on and stay sharp forever.

I also made one out of a jigsaw blade. I use it almost like a pencil --but it doesn't hold an edge for long.

I'm actually in the process of making a new handle for one of my knives right now. It's the first knife I got--another carver gave it to me when I expressed an interest in carving, but the handle was just too small.
