Anyone know anything about the PFEIL carving tools? I have been using Flexcut and other odds and ends until now. I have seen the PFEIL tools at the Woodcraft store here and wondered if they were worth the cost. Thanks, Jerry |

I suppose it depends on what type of wood you are carving. Flexcut does well in softer hardwoods like Basswood, Tupelo, Walnut, Butternut , etc. Pfiel are a stronger tool, designed for the really hard woods: Oak, Cherry, Maple, Beech, Lime, etc. You can use Pfiel for the softer woods as well, but I haven't had success craving the harder woods with Flexcut, it just hasn't the strength. Pfiel are beautiful tools, one of the best made, I just wish I could afford more of them myself.Smile Bob

Sure, they are very good tools; most of my full-size tools are Pfeil.

...after suffering through inexpensive tools, I have purchased only Pfeil for myself, around 20 of both palm and full size tools. I believe that will last a lifetime providing I care for them well. This is not to say other quality brands (Stubai, etc.) won't do the same. But the driving force for me was that while they are pricey (Woodcraft does have periodic sales on the items) they only require that I buy them once. If they should get dull beyond my sharpening skills or if the handles wear out, it can be easily remedied by sending to someone for repair (such as Rick). So it is my belief that I will be handing these tools down to the next generation.

Woodcraft seems to be high on about everything, a good web search will give you some better prices.....check with Rick too! I have Stubai and one Auriou and happy with them both..

My Pfeil palm tools are the best tools that I own. When I need a gouge for critical situations, I use my these. I have a full set of intermediate size Pfeil tools also, but don't use them often.

I have about 75 Pheil tools Palm, regular and mallet tools they are by far my favorite tools. I find that they hold their edge really well and hone up with little or no problem. Once I have abused them to the point they need some TLC, I package them up and send the to Rick at Little Shavers. Yes I send my tools all the way from Canada to Seattle to me it is worth it to me to have them sharpened by the best. Colin

Day to day Kms tools in Canada has the best prices on pfeil tools, at least better than woodcraft. Their regular prices are sometimes better than woodcrafts sale prices. Go figure.

i love my swiss tools those are the ones i use the most with a couple flexcuts and a couple of stubias but i love my swiss mades and is about all i care to use anymore. i once had a good many henry taylors in all sizes and sold them to go back to the swiss mades they just feel better to me and hold an edge longer it seems. you will not go wrong with pfeil/swiss made tools they are worth the investment. wood-whittler |
