Default Patternmakers vise

I might have a chance to get an Emmert K-1 Patternmakers vise. Would this be a good vise for carving?. I know it's good for general woodworking. Thanks.

Hey Mike -

Emmerts are junk as far as carving is concerned, but I'll take it off your hands cheap! ;-)

Actually, I have no experience with Emmerts but I DO know they are highly coveted amongst the woodworking crowd, so if you have the chance to get it for a good price, I'd take it. Then try it and see if you like it for carving. If not - SELL it for a profit and go get what ever you think would work better for you.

Just a thought.

If you can get a good price on the vice you will probably come out ahead. The vices were known for their ability to hold a block of wood in any position you could desire. Also, if I'm not mistaken, pattern makers were wood carvers. They made the forms from which the molds were made. If they could use one to make a living carving alll day long you should also be fine.
I'm looking at Lee Valley's Tucker Vise. If I win this bet with my wife I get one in January. Wish me luck!

Good luck...my wife usually wins our bets...she must have an inside track, lol.
